Cottonwood (May 3rd – 9th)

Cottonwood Island Nature Park has 2.2 kilometers of relatively flat trails. A local favourite, visitors will enjoy the many winding trails along the river and close-up views of the historical CN Rail Bridge that was built in 1914. To access the park, you can park your vehicle in the lot next to the Prince George Railway and Forestry Museum, or get into the park by following the Heritage River Trail or the Centennial Trail.

Keep your eyes peeled for the many unique carvings that are scattered across the cottonwood trees throughout the park. These carvings were done by local resident Elmer Gunderson, who’s work can also be purchased in the Prince George Visitor Centre.

Other amenities at the park include washrooms, a picnic shelters, benches and picnic tables, a canoe launch, and a paved boat launch. Due to the relatively flat trails, a good portion of this park is accessible with a wheelchair, scooter, or stroller.

L’heidli T’enneh Memorial Park
(May 10th – 16th)

Formerly known as Fort George Park, Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park was renamed in 2015 to recognize the area had once been a Lheidli T’enneh village. Pets are not allowed except along the Heritage River Trail System when they must be leashed at all times.

You can access the park from 17th avenue or Beacott Place, next to the Exploration Place. Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park features a playground, a spray park, and the Little Prince mini-steam train railroad for young children. It also features the Kiwanis Bandshell, Beach volleyball courts and many picnic sports, benches, and washrooms.

The Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park Pavilion opened on National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, 2018. The Pavilion represents a partnership between the City of Prince George and the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation and features steel beams with ceilings made of Douglas-fir panels.

The park is quite flat with paved paths therefore it is accommodating for wheelchairs, scooters, or strollers.

LC Gunn Park (May 24th – 30th

The main LC Gunn Park trail follows the bluffs above the Fraser River and offers great views of Prince George and the Lhiedli T’enneh Memorial Park. Located only a few minutes from downtown, the park’s trails trace a similar route travelled by earlier railway surveyors. The rustic trails are shared by dog walkers, joggers, and mountain bikers.

To access LC Gunn, head east from downtown Prince George on highway 16 and take a right onto Guay Road. Follow Guat road directly into the LC Gunn Park parking lot. If you choose, you can walk the entire trail and end up near the Simon Fraser Bridge and highway 97. Be sure to bring your hiking shoes, as the 3.5 km trail each way has some significant climbs!
